Who still eats this stuff? Even my step dad who has the worst diet in the world doesn’t touch American Slices, cheese or no cheese.
This unusual experiment was carried out by a lady who was concerned about her and others wellbeing; a warning to consumers. She tried lighting “American Slices” in the hopes of getting it to react *normally. She notes that the burning of the “Pasteurized Processed Sandwich Slices” shared the same characteristics as plastic being burned. She explains that the “cheese” burns black and bubbles but does not drip, or melt. I’m tempted to use the word cheese, but we all know now that this isn’t cheese even though I’m sure they sell the product right next to the real stuff. Here are the ingredients for this particular product:
Water, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Food Starch, Casein and/or Caseinate, Whey, Modified Food Starch, Salt, Natural Flavor, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Phosphate, Stabilizers (Xanthan Gum, Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum), Sorbic Acid (as a preservative), Artificial Color, Lactic Acid.
Fortunately, nowhere on the front of the package does it list the word cheese. Unfortunately, it’s what many view as edible “cheese” based on childhood memory. Too many of us have grown up eating cheap fast food “cheeseburgers”. If you want to know why the slice reacted the way it did than look into each ingredient. Could it be the emulsifiers? Its best to just buy organic than to memorize and avoid certain ingredients in my opinion. But if you wish to continue eating like this than it’s best to get familiar with what you’re consuming.
Not all products should have the right to call itself cheese. For instance, in the past Velveeta’s description on the package got a call from the FDA, because it contained an ingredient that isn’t “Generally Regarded As Safe” (GRAS) by the FDA. The FDA rules specify that any food product containing unapproved food ingredient is adulterated and illegal. In the case of the ingredient MPC, the FDA has chosen to look the other way.

“In 2002, the FDA issued a Warning Letter to Kraft that Velveeta was being sold with packaging that described it as a “Pasteurized Process Cheese Spread”, which the FDA claimed was misbranded because the product declared milk protein concentrate (MPC) in its ingredients listing. Velveeta is now sold in the US as a “Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product”, a term for which the FDA does not maintain a standard of identity, and which therefore may contain MPC.”
Kraft American Singles also uses milk protein concentrate. Unfortunately, Kraft American Singles is a step up from its competition in the video. The ingredients below is what makes Kraft American Singles:
Milk, Whey, Milkfat, Milk Protein Concentrate, Salt, Calcium Phosphate, Sodium Citrate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Sodium Phosphate, Sorbic Acid as a Preservative, Apocarotenal (Color), Annatto (Color), Enzymes, Vitamin D3, Cheese Culture.

“Legally processed cheese cannot be sold as “cheese”. It needs to be called a “cheese food”. In fact, the FDA highly regulates how products can be labeled based on their cheese ingredient, moisture content, and milkfat:
-Pasteurized process cheese – contains 100% cheese
-Pasteurized process cheese food – contains at least 51% cheese.
-Pasteurized process cheese product – contains less than 51% cheese.”
