Tips For Teens to Avoid Date Rape

Presently, acquaintance or date rape is the most common sexual assault crime. Many people believe that acquaintance rape is not as serious. Others believe this type of sexual assault is not a real rape. However, this is incorrect because any sexual assault is very serious. No one ever asked to be raped. No one deserves to be raped. No matter the relationship between the perpetrator and victim it is a felony. Acquaintance rape is just as devastating as an assault by a stranger.

Teenagers need to be informed about this type of assault and how to protect themselves. Talk to your teen about the fact that when someone says no, it really does mean just that: no. Explain how drugs and alcohol can affect judgment and may make it difficult to actually identify a potentially dangerous situation.

Make sure your teen understands that she needs to be careful in situations where she may feel like she is being pressured in to something. Make sure she understands that should she feel threatened, say no and get away as quickly as possible.

It is better to be embarrassed than assaulted. When attending parties, have your teen go with trusted friends that can look out for each other.

Educate your teen about date rape drugs. These include Rohypnol, known on the street as Lunch Money and Roofies; as well as GHB, also known as Liquid Ecstasy, Grievious Bodily Harm and such. Explain that these drugs can be easily slipped into a drink because they are odorless and almost tasteless. These drugs can impair judgment, and can cause confusion, drowsiness and unconsciousness. They can even cause death.

Give your teen the tools to avoid date rape drugs. Advise her to only drink beverages she opens herself. Tell her not to share drinks or consume drinks from a community punch bowl or anything similar.
